Caravan

A line of camels threads across the lower third of Caravan, Nicholas Roerich guiding the eye toward slopes of pale snow under a deep, even blue. The beasts move in single file, small against the vastness. Roerich paints the mountain mass in broad, flattened planes, temperature held low so the caravan itself carries all the warmth. ochre and russet in the riders cloaks, the dark pulse of pack animals, cold violet shadow pooling where the ridge turns away. Every form is simplified, almost hieratic, the way memory simplifies a journey.
