Captors of Fire

Two figures move across a steep Himalayan slope, bent toward the flame they carry. Nicholas Roerich titled the scene Captors of Fire, and the name lands: fire is the whole subject, held and handed between travelers. Burnt orange and deep red anchor the composition, the flame thrown against cold blue ridges that stack into the distance. The figures read almost in silhouette, robed, their posture heavy with purpose, while Roerich tempers the heat with tempera-soft distances and flat, ceremonial color.
