Canal at Moret

A canal slides through Moret, and Gustave Loiseau follows its slow current to the old mill town. Loiret reflections break into long dashes of green and rust beside stone facings. Water holds half the composition. Poplars along the towing path stand thin against a milky sky, their trunks scumbled in violet grey. Rooftops of the town press down toward the lock, warm terracotta against a cool bank of trees, and the brushwork stays loose, almost stitched, in the manner of his Post Impressionist mentors. Light sits flat and silvery, the kind that comes after rain. It belongs in a reading room or a hallway with pale plaster walls, where the quiet water and cool palette can set the pace of the day.
