California Poppy Field

Orange poppies flood the lower half of the picture, a sheet of color broken only by green stems and the blue shadows between them. California Poppy Field carries that blaze across the whole canvas. Granville Redmond knew these slopes well, and the knowledge shows in every brushstroke. Look closely and the field resolves into individual blooms: red-orange petals with darker centers, pale yellow patches where the light hits hardest, sage-green foliage cooling the temperature. Rolling hills rise behind in muted lavender and ochre, their edges softened by haze. The sky above holds a quiet, chalky blue, thinning to white at the horizon.
