Cabbage Field with Willows

Rows of cabbages stretch across the foreground, blue-green heads pressed into dark soil. Victor Borisov-Musatov builds the scene around them. Behind the vegetable rows, willows lift pale trunks and grey foliage against a hazy sky, their branches trailing over the garden edge. Muted violets cool the earth tones, soft edges blur the horizon, and the whole surface carries the chalky texture of tempera-like paint worked in layered washes.
