By the Sea

A broad shoreline opens toward the horizon, water laid in wide tempera washes of cobalt and teal. Nicholas Roerich titled the scene By the sea, and the name says exactly what the eye meets first. Pale surf breaks against dark headlands at the left, the rock built up in short, angular strokes of slate and violet. The sky holds most of the color: bands of turquoise deepen into a hard ultramarine at the top edge, while the water stays flat and glassy near the shore. Thin light collects along the wave crests, brushed on in almost white strokes that read as cold northern daylight. Roerich painted coasts the way he painted mountains, as silent architecture. The mood suits a study or reading nook, anywhere a quiet expanse of blue can slow a room down.
