By the Sea

Blue water chops against a shore of burning red rock, small sailboats heeled over in the wind. By the Sea shows Louis Valtat painting the Mediterranean coast the way he felt it, color first. Vermilion headlands stack against an ultramarine swell, shadows going violet where the light drops. Brushwork sits thick on the surface, contours pressed in dark and deliberate, pine green and foam white breaking the blue. Forms are simplified to their essentials, loaded with pigment. A stair landing, a sunroom, a beach house reading nook, any room that could use a jolt of noon on the Riviera gets it here, straight and undiluted.
