Foam breaks along a chalk shoreline in Gustave Loiseau By the Sea, a coastal scene rendered in the flickering post impressionist touch he refined along the Normandy coast. Loiseau builds the water from short, overlapping strokes of grey green, slate blue, and cream, so the surface seems to shift with the light. Pale sky presses down on the horizon while the wet sand holds thin ribbons of reflected white, and small dark figures or boats anchor the middle distance. A natural fit above a console in an entryway, or across from a window in a reading room where coastal light carries through the day.
