Meadows run down to the Eure, and Gustave Loiseau gives the water barely a dozen brushstrokes. That economy is the point. His oil paint sits in short, dragged touches, built up in the en plein air manner, so the current reads as a strip of grey green flicked with white where the light catches it. Willows crowd the left bank, their trunks worked in wet on wet browns. On the far side a low roofline and a handful of poplars hold the horizon in place. Fine art of this order suits a reading nook or a quiet hallway where the eye can rest.
