A river bend catches the afternoon light in By the Oise River, where Gustave Loiseau sets his easel at the waterline and lets the current carry the composition. Poplars hold the far bank. Their reflections waver in strokes of olive, ochre, and cold green. The sky above stays pale and open, brushed in soft grays that give the water its silvered sheen. Houses with pale shutters sit low behind the trees, small and patient. Loiseau builds the surface with short, crosshatched dabs, a technique he learned from the impressionists and made his own. It suits a study, a hallway, or any quiet corner where calm water belongs.
