By the Loing River

The Loing slides past a small riverside town, its surface broken into short flecks of pale green and grey. Gustave Loiseau painted this stretch of water with the loose, flickering touch that marked his riverscapes. Boats moor along the near bank, their hulls rendered in quick dashes of ochre and muted blue. Poplars rise behind the rooftops, their foliage built from dabbed strokes of sage and olive that let the ground show through. The light sits low and even, the kind that flattens shadows and pulls every reflection into the water. Suited to a reading nook or a quiet corner of a living room where the calm of a French river belongs.
