By the Eure River in Summer

A bend of the Eure fills the lower canvas, its summer current running slow under heavy green banks. Gustave Loiseau painted the river the way it actually behaves in July: low water, glassy patches, reflected sky broken only where cattle wade at the shallows. His brushwork carries the heat. Short, enameled strokes of viridian and raw sienna build the tree line stroke by stroke, while the far meadow dissolves into pale lemon haze. Nothing is smoothed over; every touch of the brush stays visible, giving the surface a woven, fabric-like texture. It belongs in a sunlit reading room, a hallway with good daylight, or above a writing desk that faces the garden.
