By the Eure River in Autumn

Autumn crowds the banks of the Eure. Gustave Loiseau paints the river in late October light, willows dropping copper leaves onto water the color of wet slate. The surface carries his signature en treillis crosshatching, small loaded strokes of russet, ochre and gray green laid side by side so the current seems to flicker between them. Reflections of bare branches break apart on the moving water, and a soft white sky presses the far bank down into mist. Made for a study or reading room that wants quiet, this river scene gives a wall the hush of a Normandy afternoon.
