Hoarfrost whitens the banks of the Eure in this Gustave Loiseau river scene, cold morning light catching every reed and bare branch along the water. Loiseau paints the frost itself in flickering touches of pale lilac and ice white over slate blue water and ochre mud, the kind of broken brushwork he learned among the post impressionists.
