Butterflies

Butterflies drift upward in a loose constellation, their wings rendered as thin veils of pigment against a darkened ground. Ciurlionis treats the insects less like specimens and more like musical notation, each shape a small pause in a larger rhythm. Look closely and the wings dissolve into tempered layers of muted violet, dusty gold and faded green, their edges softening until body and background nearly merge. Faint linear traces, closer to drawing than finished paint, run through the forms and give the whole surface a lifted, weightless quality. A quiet subject for a study or reading nook, where its hushed palette and delicate forms reward slow looking.
