Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge strides across George Luks canvas, stone towers planted deep in the East River while a humped span of cable and roadway pulls the eye toward Manhattan. Ashcan School grit runs through the whole scene. Luks paints the masonry in slabs of brown and gray, thick impasto catching light along the Gothic arches. Below, tugboats and ferries drag pale wakes through green water, and a smeared sky of leaden white presses down on the ironwork. Every stroke is loaded, visible, unapologetic, the brushwork of a newspaper illustrator turned painter of the city. A loft living room, a study with dark shelving, or an entryway that wants some New York swagger would carry it well.
