Bridges

Arched spans stretch across still water in Bridges, a work by Lithuanian symbolist Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis where architecture does the work of a dream. Every pier lands somewhere improbable. The crossing continues past the edge of seeing. Slender stone arches repeat in careful rhythm, their reflections doubling the structure below the waterline so the eye cannot tell where masonry ends and mirror begins. Cool grey and muted blue govern the palette, with pale light caught along the upper curves. Figures move across at a distance, small as notes on a staff, a reminder that Ciurlionis thought in both paint and music. The whole composition holds the hush of a town seen from far upstream at dusk. It belongs in a hallway, a study, or above a writing desk, anywhere a quiet passage between two worlds feels apt.
