About this work

Bread on the Blue

Bread on the Blue puts a humble loaf at center stage, Pyotr Konchalovsky giving a painted crust more presence than most portraits manage for a living face. Cobalt and ultramarine flood the ground behind the loaf, applied in thick oil paint that leaves visible ridges across the surface. The crust turns through ochre, burnt sienna and deep umber, highlights dragged on with a loaded brush, while a torn edge exposes chalk white crumb. A kitchen or dining room suits it best, where those cold depths keep morning light crisp and the loaf promises something warm on the table.
