Bowl

The title says bowl, but the carving shows far more: a vessel supported by figures, wood worked by Olowe of Ise into architecture as much as container. Dark patina pools in the recesses of the grain. Raised figures rise around the rim, bodies tensed mid-motion, faces set in the compact symmetry the master carver favored. The base carries deep textural contrast, smooth planes against chiseled striations, catching light unevenly across its surface. Study the underside and the logic of the whole reveals itself, weight passing through carved limbs into a circular foot. It asks for a room with open shelf space, an entryway or library where objects can breathe and be seen from several angles.
