Bouquet of Tulips

Tulips crowd the frame in Bouquet of Tulips by Cuno Amiet, red and white cups opening at different stages while stems lean and cross at odd angles. Petals are built from single loaded strokes of oil, scarlet and shell pink sitting in raised ridges where the brush dragged. Cool blue green leaves cut against a saturated ground while the vase stays barely suggested, a dark shape keeping the flowers upright. A breakfast room or entryway suits color this direct; the blooms carry across a distance, and the heavy brushwork holds up at close range too.
