Boulevard of Battignolles

A rain-washed Paris boulevard stretches across the composition, the pavement reflecting a pale northern sky in long silvery strokes. Boulevard of Battignolles belongs to Edouard Vuillard, who turned an ordinary street corner into something quietly monumental. Lampposts lean at slight angles. Carriages and blurred passersby register as dark dabs against the wet grey light, the whole scene held together by Vuillard's close, layered brushwork. Buildings rise in muted mauve and ochre facades, their windows a rhythm of small dark rectangles. Trees along the boulevard thin out into bare, gestural branches. A study or hallway with soft daylight suits this street scene, where its hushed tonal palette can breathe.
