Border of Tibet

A caravan track bends toward a rampart of peaks at the threshold of Tibet. Nicholas Roerich titled this scene Border of Tibet, and the name reads plainly in the composition: the moment land becomes frontier. Low ochre hills occupy the foreground, worked in dry, scumbled brushwork that leaves the tempera surface grainy as stone. Behind them the ridgeline climbs in bands of slate and ultramarine, snow caps laid on thick and almost white against a sky of deep, even blue. The proportions compress distance into bands of color, a method Roerich used across his Central Asian journeys. Suits a study or hallway where horizon lines can breathe across a long wall.
