Bomen

Trees climb the composition in Bomen, trunks twisting upward like dark flames while Jacoba van Heemskerck lights each crown in glassy color. Nothing in the grove stands at attention. A heavy black contour wraps every limb, the line a glazier leads between panes, so branches read as soldered seams. Cobalt, viridian and vermilion sit flat and unshaded against the pale ground, and the sky between them breaks into small colored cells, a window caught at midday. Give it a stairwell or dining room with plain walls and steady daylight; the leaded seams carry at a distance, and the colors keep shifting as the light does.
