Boats on the Seine

Masts and moored hulls line the Seine in this Gustave Loiseau river scene, barges and sailing craft resting along the bank while light breaks across the moving water. Loiseau builds the surface from short, deliberate brushstrokes, his post impressionist crosshatching setting pale reflections against deep river greens and the soft grey of Paris skies. Quays, footbridges and the masts of the boats on the Seine give the composition its upright rhythm. A natural choice for a study or hallway, where a riverside view brings the air of the Seine into daily comings and goings.
