Boats on the Seine at Oissel

Boats ride at anchor where the Seine widens at Oissel, masts and rigging stitched in short, deliberate strokes. The Post-Impressionist Gustave Loiseau builds the river scene from crosshatched layers of oil paint. Dark hulls sit low in grey-green water. Their reflections break into flecks of lilac and ochre where the current moves. Along the far bank, poplars and low rooftops dissolve into a Norman sky brushed in silver, rose, and cold white. That moored calm suits a study or a reading nook, anywhere that wants river air and the slow traffic of a working waterway.
