Boat of Garten

Trees crowd the banks of the Spey where Samuel Peploe found Boat of Garten, their trunks bent and pale against a sky of cool, washed grey. The village sits quiet among them, half hidden by foliage. Brushwork carries the scene. Thick strokes of moss green and ochre build the riverbank, while the water below runs in long, flat ribbons of slate and silver, catching light without a single hard edge. Peploe lets the trees dominate, their canopies pressed in over the bank so the eye keeps moving, up and back, through shade and open air. Suited to a study or reading nook, where the cool greens of the Speyside woods read as calm at close range.
