Blumenstilleben

Poppies and marguerites jostle inside a squat earthenware vase, petals loaded with paint so thick it catches the light from one side. It is Blumenstilleben, a flower still life by the Swiss painter Cuno Amiet. He builds the bouquet in heavy impasto. Each petal is a separate ridge of vermilion or chrome yellow; stems cross in olive green. Behind, the backdrop splits into two planes, one warm cream, one cool blue grey, so the heads push forward off the surface. A dining room or kitchen takes it well. Scarlet blooms answer linen and terracotta, and the whole composition holds its own above a sideboard.
