Bluff at Pourville

A chalk bluff slides toward the Normandy shore, its pale face streaked with violet shadow, in Bluff at Pourville, a coastal scene by American impressionist Guy Rose. The Channel runs grey-green beneath a pearl sky, wavelets breaking in short white combs at the tide line. Broken color does the drawing here: cobalt in the hollows, warm pink through the grass on top, thick loaded strokes of oil paint catching daylight along the rock edge. Set in a sunroom, a stairway, or a study with coastal leanings, the scene keeps the salt air of the French coast close at hand.
