Blue Sky

A canopy of cerulean holds nearly the whole surface of Blue Sky, broken only by the dark tips of forest conifers pushing up from the lower edge. Emily Carr painted the Pacific Northwest woods from beneath, looking up. Brushwork moves in long, wet strokes of cobalt, teal and white, the pigment still reading as weather: high thin cloud dragged across open air, sunlight pooling at the treetops. The trunks are reduced to black spires, almost calligraphic against that breadth of blue. Suited to a bright study or a reading nook with pale walls, where the cool tone and open composition give the eye somewhere far to travel.
