About this work

Blue Sea, Iona

Turquoise water fills the canvas almost edge to edge. Samuel Peploe named the picture Blue Sea, Iona, and the title tells you where to look: the sea is the subject. Breakers run in short white strokes across a blue that shifts from deep cobalt at the horizon to pale aqua near the shore. The Hebridean island sits low and dark along the top, its rocks built from blunt planes of violet, green and grey. Light flattens the water into bands of clean, unmixed colour, the method the Scottish Colourists brought back from the Mediterranean and aimed at the west coast of Scotland. Coastal light like this suits a bright hallway or a bedroom that faces morning sun.
