Blue Barge — Canvas

A barge rides the water in shades of blue, its hull and rigging built from loose, confident strokes of cobalt and slate. Frances Hodgkins titled the work Blue Barge, and the name says nearly everything the eye needs first. Hodgkins worked in gouache and watercolor with a modernist hand, and the surface here shows it: pigment pooled in wet passages, then overridden by dry, angular lines that nudge the boat slightly off balance. Masts tilt. Reflections break into pale dashes. The palette holds cerulean, indigo, and a wash of green where hull meets harbor, with small accents of ochre warming the deck. Composition matters more than topography. Forms sit slightly askew, arranged for rhythm rather than accuracy, the way a harbor looks when remembered instead of measured. That looseness suits a sunroom or a coastal hallway, anywhere light shifts through the day.
