Blue and White Suprematist Composition

A single pale rectangle floats against a deeper field of blue, and the whole eye follows its slow drift. That is the quiet drama of Ivan Kliun in his Blue and White Suprematist Composition, geometry set adrift from all description. Look closer and the flatness dissolves. The blues shift in weight, one plane cool and glassy, another nearly midnight, each edge crisp as cut paper laid over painted ground. Kliun, a close ally of the suprematists in Moscow, built these balances so the colors appear to hover at different depths. It suits a minimal study, a hallway painted chalk white, or a reading corner where a single calm accent carries the room.
