Biron Palace and barges

Barges ride low on a slow river, moored along the embankment below Biron Palace in this woodcut by Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva. The stone facade rises in quiet order above them, its windows cut into the pale grain of the block. Crosshatching builds the water in short, controlled strokes, each hull and mast resolved into clean black lines against grey. The palace frontage reads as architecture first, mood second, its cornices and pilasters kept firm while the current softens underneath. Reflections break where the barges interrupt the surface. A study or hallway with cool northern light would hold this well, the grey and black tonality sitting naturally beside plain plaster and dark wood.
