Birches in the Snow

A loose stand of birches holds the middle distance, white stems gleaming against a pewter winter sky. Konchalovsky called the scene Birches in the Snow. Paint lies thick over the drifts, cool blue pooled in hollows, warm ivory where low light rakes across. Dark rungs and slashes climb each chalky trunk, and bare twigs crosshatch the grey above. A thread of ochre warms the far tree line, violet shadow pooling beneath the roots. An entryway or study in walnut and forest green gives all that cold brightness something to answer, and the room breathes easier for it.
