Birches in Autumn

White trunks rise through a screen of gold, their bark picked out in loose grey strokes. Birches in autumn by Pyotr Konchalovsky holds the grove in one burning week before frost. The oil goes on thick, foliage built from dabs of ochre, cadmium yellow and burnt sienna. Black hatch marks score the white bark, those diamond scars every birch carries. Fallen leaves drift across cool ground under a slate sky. A study with pale wood and linen takes on the whole amber season beside it, and the grove keeps burning through the greyest mornings.
