Birch Trees in Early Spring

Slender birch trunks rise from a thawing wood in Birch trees in early spring, Pyotr Konchalovsky catching the season at the exact hour when sap begins to run. Black diamond scars break the white bark at knee height, and violet shadows pool where old snow still clings to the leaf litter. The new canopy is barely there, a scatter of small green flecks and hanging catkins, brushed in thick open strokes that let the ground color show through. A stair landing with steady north light, or a reading nook in plain oak and linen, suits the hushed palette and gives those pale stems room to stand.
