Birch Tree

A lone birch takes the whole stage, pale trunk rising through a scatter of green leaf. Pyotr Konchalovsky treats the tree like a portrait sitter, close and unhurried. Black lozenge marks break the chalky bark at knee and shoulder height. The paint sits thick, ridges of sage and viridian catching light along every bough, while slivers of sky flicker between the fine twigs. Grass at the root line runs cool blue green. It suits a hallway that needs some height, a quiet reading nook, or a study corner that wants one clean breath of country air.
