Birbe Mountain from Keylong

A single peak fills the picture: Birbe mountain from Keylong, painted by Nicholas Roerich during his Himalayan years. Cold air presses against the slopes, and the summit holds its snow like held breath. The color does the work. Steep flanks shift from slate gray into violet shadow, while thin snowfields catch a pale, almost pearlescent light. Brushwork runs broad and dry, layering pigment so the rock face reads as geology rather than scenery. Above it, the sky deepens into the dense ultramarine Roerich reserved for high altitude, a blue that seems thick enough to touch.
