Bild no. 41

Sail shapes and hull curves ride across Bild no. 41, Jacoba van Heemskerck setting each form inside a black contour the way a glazier leads colored glass into a window frame. Color does the structural work here: cobalt, vermilion, and gold sit in flat translucent planes, paper glowing through them like daylight behind glass. The black contour swells and thins with the pressure of the hand, and no form takes a shadow. Give it a stairwell or a reading nook with white walls and plain wood, and the composition does the rest, carrying the room on line and color alone.
