Ships ride a band of cobalt water beneath a broad mountain slope. Bild no. 15, Berg und Schiffe comes from the Expressionist hand of Jacoba van Heemskerck, where every form is locked inside a black contour line. Sails read as pale triangles against the dark sea, hulls reduced to narrow slivers of white and red. The mountain climbs in stepped planes of green and violet, its edges thickened like lead came in a stained glass window. Water sits flat, unmodulated, pure pigment. A hallway or stair landing gives the black lines room to carry; the composition holds its own against plain plaster and pale wood floors.
