Big City Train Station

Smoke and steam crowd a great arched shed where locomotives idle beneath iron ribs. Big City Train Station by Hans Baluschek gathers porters, commuters and signal lamps into one restless evening scene. Grey and soot tones dominate, cut by warm lamplight on wet platforms. Crosshatched shadows fall over waiting crowds while a signal gantry cuts a hard diagonal across the sky. Baluschek paints the industrial city without sentiment: sooty brick, iron trusses, faces turned toward departures. Hang it in a study or hallway where its grainy urban mood gives a plain wall something to say.
