Bharagarh Fort

A hill fortress climbs out of the painted rocks of Bharagarh Fort, rendered by Nicholas Roerich in tempera over layered washes of terracotta, ochre and slate blue. Ramparts and towers compress into angular blocks that catch the last light of a mountain evening. Crumpled ridgelines sweep down toward a valley floor of muted violet shadow. The fort walls read almost as cut stone, their edges defined in dry, grainy strokes, while the sky above burns through bands of copper and deep cerulean. Every plane feels carved, not soft. A study, an entryway, a library wall beside travel books and old maps will hold this without crowding.
