Ben More rises across the sound from Iona, a mountain mass painted in deep violets and cool blues. Samuel Peploe sets the peak against a pale Hebridean sky, letting the island foreground stay low and quiet. The foreground carries the weight of the Scottish Colourist hand: short, loaded strokes of green and mauve over a lean underdrawing, the sea cut with hard bands of turquoise where light breaks on the water. Grasses and rock in the near field are drawn quickly, almost notated, while the mountain itself is built from flatter planes of colour laid on thick and decisive. A view like this holds a hallway or stairwell well, where the strong vertical of the peak can carry along a tall stretch of wall.
