Belkino. Birches

A stand of birches crosses the meadow edge, trunks pale against a high summer sky. Belkino. Birches by Pyotr Konchalovsky records a Russian estate afternoon in loaded, deliberate brushwork. Black hatch marks score the white bark at eye level, each trunk built from short turns of the brush. Greens run from olive shadow to yellowed grass; the canopy breaks into dabs of blue-grey foliage where light gets through. Oil paint sits in ridges, giving the field a woven, almost embroidered surface. Hang it where quiet pays off, a study or reading nook with linen and pale wood, and the grove does the rest.
