Beach

Wet sand holds the light. In Beach, Fujishima Takeji sets a low horizon against a wide stretch of shore, where pale water thins into foam and the sky burns down to a milky pearl at its edge. Look closer and the paint does quiet work. Thin washes of grey blue run across the shallows, the sand is built from short strokes of cream, buff, and faint rose, and a single dark note, perhaps a figure or a beached skiff, anchors the middle distance. Nothing is fussed over. The brushwork stays loose, almost breathless, catching wind and glare in the same gesture. Suited to a sunroom, a hallway with good daylight, or above a linen covered console, where its salt air and open horizon give a room room to breathe.
