Bay of Naples

Vesuvius sits far off across a pale expanse of water, and the whole harbor of the Bay of Naples unfolds beneath it in Marquet’s calm, unhurried hand. The title alone carries the salt air. The water does most of the talking here: a broad sheet of gray blue broken by the dark hulls of moored boats, their masts drawn as thin vertical strokes against the sky. Quays and low waterfront buildings hold the middle distance in muted terracotta and cream, while the volcano looms in a single soft silhouette. Marquet’s flat, even light and suppressed palette show the Fauve turned quiet. This seascape suits a study or a reading nook, anywhere a window on the harbor is welcome.
