Battle in the Heavens

Horsemen sweep across a burning sky, lances tilted toward clouds that split open above them. Battle in the Heavens belongs to the visionary world of Nicholas Roerich, where combat happens not on ground but in the ether itself. Look at the color logic. Vermilion and molten orange tear through deep ultramarine, the figures of riders reduced to dark silhouettes against the flare. Roerich builds the turbulence in broad tempera planes, then sharpens spears and banners with thin, calligraphic strokes. Below the fray, a horizon of low hills stays flat and quiet, which makes the sky feel genuinely violent by contrast. Hang it in a study or a stairwell where light shifts through the day, and the sky will seem to reignite each time you pass.
