Bathers, Woodland

Bathers stand waist-deep in a woodland pool, pale shoulders lit by flecks of light that slip through the leaf cover. Bathers, Woodland finds Ernest Lawson, the American Impressionist, at his most intimate. Brushwork sits thick on the surface, green dragged over ochre in raised ridges that catch actual light. Tree trunks climb in slate and violet shadow. Dappled shade collects beneath the canopy, and warm skin tones anchor the center where a limb stirs the creek. A sunroom or reading nook suits it best, any spot where afternoon light can answer the broken shade held in those leaves.
