Barra

Low white houses of Barra hold their ground against a churned pewter sea. Peploe paints the island the way wind leaves it: stripped back, salt scoured, almost bare. The water carries thick ridges of blue grey pigment, dragged and reworked until it reads as weather rather than paint. Grass on the machair comes up in short jabs of green, and the sky sits heavy above a single croft roof, its chimney a small dark stroke. Every brushload is placed with the decisiveness of the Scottish Colourists at their most direct. Hung in a stairwell or a cool north facing sitting room, it gives a plain wall the discipline and salt air of the Outer Hebrides.
