Barra

Barra rises out of the sea on a narrow band of sand, its dark hill shouldering the sky while pale surf folds along the shore. Samuel Peploe builds the island from blocks of clean, unblended color: sea green water, a slab of chalky sand, violet shadow climbing the ridge. Clouds sit in thick pale strokes, and the horizon line stays low so the sky presses down with real weight. The brushwork is quick and square, each mark carrying one color and no apology. A room with plain plaster walls and north light suits it: a study, a hallway, anywhere the eye wants somewhere far away to go.
